What do you like most about your major?
What I like most about my major is the people I get to work with. I am honestly honored to have had the opportunity to meet and work with so many other students who desire to go do great things in the world of construction. The construction management department at ECU has fostered an environment of goal setting and productivity, and it is manifest among my classmates.
What does receiving a scholarship mean to you?
I count each one of these scholarships as nothing short of a blessing from God. I am utterly dumbfounded at all the support I’ve received; they have encouraged me to keep going. Not only do they make it possible for me to go to college without drowning in student loan debt, they also motivate me to be a force of good in my classes, extracurriculars and the workforce.
Why should alumni support scholarships?
If alumni have a desire to support the education of students, supporting scholarships is fundamental in that effort. Scholarships give students the help they need to get an education, but also financial freedom in the long term. In my experience, scholarships motivate students to complete quality work and contribute to a culture of generosity. Alumni have a special opportunity to help that culture grow and continue a chain of giving for generations.
About the donors
Rick Judson ’70 is a Charlotte-based home builder and chairman of the board of the National Association of Home Builders. He attended ECU on athletic scholarships and is listed on the Athletics Wall of Fame.
George C. Turner is the principal officer of the Summer Rest Foundation, a private trust foundation. He served on the ECU Educational Foundation board of directors from 2011 to 2013. The scholarship was previously the Ready Mixed Concrete Scholarship, a company Turner managed for 28 years.
The West Memorial Fund was established in memory of S. Eugene and Vivian S. West. The fund places priority on Greenville and Pitt County. The fund supports multiple Access Scholarships.
